Aguigwo Gerald Joins West Africa University Debate Community SPAR Management Team

In a significant achievement for Godfrey Okoye University Enugu and its thriving debate ecosystem, Aguigwo Gerald Somtochukwu has been officially appointed as a member of the management team for the prestigious West Africa University Debate Community (WAUDC) SPAR program.
Gerald, a standout debater from the College of Medicine, rose to national recognition during the 2024 DebateCoolit Tournament, where he delivered what was widely acclaimed as the Best Single Debate Performance of the entire championship. His elevation to the SPAR management team marks a new milestone in his already impressive debate career and signals a growing influence in regional academic discourse.
Over the years, Gerald has accumulated an outstanding record of achievements. He was a key member of Team Emerald. This Godfrey Okoye University squad advanced to the quarterfinals of the DebateCoolit Tournament, defeating top contenders including the reigning ANUDC champions from the University of Nigeria Nsukka. His commanding presence and logical precision stood out as hallmarks of his performance.
Most recently, Gerald broke into the finals of the Novice Series of the All Nigerian Youth Debate Championship, finishing as first runner-up (Top 2). This national feat further solidifies his place as one of the most promising young debaters in the country.
He also represented Godfrey Okoye University in the World War Debate Tournament and the West African Universities Debating Championship (WAUDC) held on Discord.
The SPAR management team of WAUDC plays a critical role in advancing the debate culture across the region. Its members are entrusted with mentoring emerging talents, advising on tournament design, promoting institutional engagement, and representing the interests of university debaters across West Africa.
Speaking on the appointment, the Coordinator of Competitions at Godfrey Okoye University, Mrs. Uchanta Chukwu, congratulated Gerald and described the recognition as “a well-deserved testament to his brilliance, consistency, and leadership within and beyond the university.” She added that the Directorate of Competitions is “proud to see one of its contributing at such a high level in the continental debate community.”
Aguigwo Gerald’s appointment is not only a personal triumph but also a reflection of Godfrey Okoye University's growing reputation as a powerhouse for intellectual and oratory excellence in Africa.
