Directorate of Competitions Day Speech
By Mrs. Uchanta Chukwu, the Director of the Directorate of Competitions

About a year ago, we were not a Directorate.
We were simply a small dream, a few passionate students and a handful of believers who thought, maybe we could compete… Maybe we could win… maybe we could make Godfrey Okoye University proud.
I remember the day I went to Father Vice-Chancellor.
He looked at me and asked, “Are the students ready?”
And with a faith louder than fear, I answered, “If we don’t begin, we will never be ready.”
That simple statement became the catalyst that drives the Directorate of Competitions.
From that moment, a dream became a mission.
A mission became a movement.
A movement became a Directorate.
We faced challenges, raising funds, seeking parental consent, and building commitment in training sessions.
But somehow, with grit and grace, we showed up.
We arrived at tournaments looking like we had rehearsed with angels.
We fought like warriors with nothing to lose but faith.
We conquered fever, fatigue, long journeys, food our bodies still do not forgive, and yet, we triumphed.
We went from a nameless team to a Directorate recognized across campuses and continents.
We debated.
We wrote.
We spoke.
We innovated.
And every time, whether we returned with a trophy or a lesson , we returned with pride.
From ANUDC to DebateCoolit, from Abuja City Journal Essay to Kampala Open, from Bluecode hackathons to public speaking, our footprint is everywhere.
Each medal is not just a prize.
It is proof that when courage meets opportunity, wings appear.
I will never forget the bravery of our students , those who fought through sickness, doubt, or exhaustion.
Or the moment a student battling food poisoning looked me in the eye and said, “Not in this life. I’m not backing down.”
That was the spirit that built this Directorate.
That was when I knew we were no longer just participants.
We were champions by destiny.
Today, as we celebrate the Directorate of Competitions, we do not celebrate trophies alone.
We celebrate sleepless nights.
We celebrate comebacks.
We celebrate rewritten essays, late-night meetings, tears, triumphs, and every heartbeat that keeps this dream alive.
We celebrate the Vice-Chancellor (Aka Kere DICOM)
the man who believed in beginnings,
the man who created the Directorate of Competitions,
the man who finances our vision.
We celebrate our students, who never stopped believing.
We celebrate the management, every staff member, coach, mentor, and friend who helped us rise.
To all our champions, hear me:
Each time you feel like pulling back, remember where we started.
You are the battles you overcame.
You are the medals you earned.
You are the dream that refused to quit.
The Directorate of Competitions is about a year old, a year of faith, resilience, excellence, and grace.
But this is only the beginning.
If we have come this far in just about a year, imagine the future waiting for us.
Together, we will rise higher.
Together, we will speak louder.
Together, we will keep making Godfrey Okoye University proud.
Thank you for journeying with me.
Yours in Competition,
Mrs. Uchanta Chukwu
